Once the first row is done you go back and spike the corners horizontally. We use 1/2 inch rebar ground to a dull point. We predrill a 9/16 inch hole through the first log and then use a sledge to drive the rebar in 6 inches or halfway through the lower log (for vertical spikes). You can see from the corners that we are using the butt and pass method. Having gotten this far maybe you're even ready for a discussion of log cabin construction issues.
